New Karlsruhe farmers' market creates space for enjoyment and socializing

farmers' atmosphere

On May 11, 2025, Karlsruhe celebrated a successful premiere: as part of the “Ausgeschlachtet!” open house, the first Karlsruhe farmers' market took place on the grounds of the old slaughterhouse. What began as a bold idea was an instant success – 21 regional producers and three information booths presented their products and concepts relating to sustainable nutrition and regional agriculture.

The range of products on offer ranged from lentils, tartlets, and wine to cheese, apple juice, spreads, lamb, herbs, teas, and even rare pumpkin flour – all from their own production, handcrafted, and produced locally. Particularly popular were the many conversations with the producers, who were happy to provide information, for example about old apple varieties in their juices or the complex processing of regional legumes.

A place for food – and for people

Behind the farmers' market is KA.Wert, a Karlsruhe project promoting sustainable food systems. The aim was to create a new, low-threshold source of fresh, regional food for the previously rather underserved eastern part of Karlsruhe. The old slaughterhouse – now a creative area with cultural institutions, restaurants, and events – proved to be the ideal location: lively, offering shade, and with existing infrastructure.

Unlike many previous markets, the farmers' market scores points with its inviting atmosphere, tastings, opportunities for dialogue, and combination of culture and cuisine. The market is also becoming a valuable source of supply for local restaurants.

To be continued – every first Thursday of the month

The response from exhibitors and guests was so positive that it will now continue on a regular basis:

Every first Thursday of the month, the organizers invite you to the market at Alter Schlachthof from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to regional food, there will also be a toy flea market, cultural contributions, and occasionally live cooking or hands-on activities.
