Sophia McRae (University of Freiburg) will present an ongoing case study from her doctoral research on the potential of cooperative business models to support the long-term sustainability and economic resilience of independent organic retailers in Germany. This study is part of a multi-level transdisciplinary research project that explores the mechanisms, impacts, and scaling potential of cooperative food economy governance for the transformation of regional food economies toward sustainability.

Sophia McRae is a research associate at the Humboldt Professorship for Sustainable Food Economy at the University of Freiburg, directed by Prof. Dr. Arnim Wiek. Her research focuses on sustainability innovations in food retailing, particularly through cooperative and community-based approaches, and the ecosystem functions required to support and Scale cooperative food economies.
